World Cup Leberkaese

My gf just made an exciting discovery. The local supermarket we usually get our groceries from,

http://www.globus.de

has a mascot for the soccer world cup in the form of a "Leberkaesesemmel" that has come to life:

Leberkaese is a special (particularly unhealthy) form of meat loaf, often served in a roll. The Leberkaesesemmel is a standard choice for lunch in Austria and Germany. One could also say it is the ancestor of the Kebap. For the full story, see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leberk%C3%A4se

There are many open questions. Does this choice of mascot imply that for the Germans the WC is mostly about food? Have they already lost all hopes of claiming the title? Shouldn't at least half the team be beer bottles or mugs?

Welcome -- Servus

Dear all,

Discovering other cultures is always a lot of fun, despite the problems you sometimes run into.
In the case of Bayern/Bavaria, there is so much to discover and be surprised/amused about, that I decided to start this little blog, beginning with this short introduction.

I will try to keep this mostly English, for two reasons.
1.) To make the posts readable to a wider audience.
2.) To hide them from many of the Bavarians, who either are unable, unwilling
or both to understand English. This is for my personal safety.

To capture the full extent of comedy or tragedy, I will however include verbatim Boarisch (which in some nontrivial limits resembles German and Austrian German) whenever necessary. Note that many of the statements will make extensive use of black humour, sarcasm and irony, all three of which are not mainstream in Bavaria.

An important point to make is that I am not suggesting that Austria is better than Germany. In fact, I prefer the UK (where I have lived for several years; there are surely some other nice places which I have not yet discovered) to both of them. I loathe any sort of exaggerated pride of nationality, and you will not bother me by making remarks about my Austrian background. I just don't care, as I had no say in my nationality.

Best wishes,

Martin
